My Latest *For Fun* Web Application

by Todd on August 28, 2010

This was something that’s been “in the works” for a long time before it became a full blown web application. You see I’m a pretty heavy Twitter user. I love the conversations, the discovery and the smart people I’ve met through the service. As useful as it’s been for me though, I don’t want to be tethered to it all the time…checking to make sure I wasn’t missing any conversations etc. If someone replied to me, I wanted to know about it so that I didn’t send my response 8 hours later.

Initially, I just built a simple script that connected to the Twitter API and sent me any mentions (when someone puts my username in a tweet) as a text message to my phone. After I used it for a while and told people about it, there was evidence that this could be a useful service to people who use Twitter.

I created My Mentions in early 2010 and launched it in alpha mode (invite only). To date I’ve received some very positive feedback from those using it.

Details: My Mentions is a full featured web application built on the CakePHP framework. It uses several databases to keep track of users, tweets, twitter accounts and a few other things. It also connects to the Twitter API using the OAuth method.
